I. Of the Sacred Board
Lo, the board is a square of harmonious dimensions, divided into equal cells, oft ten-by-ten in number. Each intersection is a field of battle, where stones of black and white engage in silent war.
II. Of the Players and the Stones They Bear
Two are the champions: one of obsidian hue, the other of alabaster. By turns do they lay down stones upon the board, with care and cunning, one at a time, unto the end of the game.
III. Of the Manner of Play
The first move belongeth to the black. Stones may only be laid upon unclaimed intersections. Each placement is final, etched into the annals of the match like ink upon parchment.
IV. Of Scoring and Victory
A sage eye discerneth the score thusly: one point for each cell wherein the stones align in contiguous rows, columns, or sacred diagonals of matching hue in numbers of three. He who claimeth the greater sum shall be deemed victor.
Fate is a fickle mistress. Sometimes her dice smiles on obsidian. Other times, she smiles on alabaster. Often, her dice rattle for no one, but, when they do, both players may place an additional stone per turn.
V. Of the End of the Match
When all fields are filled and no more stones may be placed, the match is concluded. Then shall the sages tally the score, and the outcome be declared.
VI. Of Honour and Conduct
Let all who partake do so in the spirit of noble contest. Let no hand seek to deceive, nor mind to exploit error. For in fair struggle is wisdom earned, and in wisdom, glory.
